SPRING PHOTO TOURS for Dall Sheep in 2006 - April 4-7

Throughout the month of April we offer fully guided 4-day photo tours for Dall Sheep, one of the most majestic game animals in North America. These are unique tours, offering the photographer, whether he or she be novice or professional, the opportunity to closely view and photograph Dall Sheep in their natural habitat. These sheep, especially the rams, are normally found at lower elevations during early spring, and are habituated to the presence of man, making them quite easy to approach. Sheep are curious animals, and it is not unusual at this time of year to have groups of rams approach to within 20 yards of the photographer.

Spring tours are not physically demanding, and normally would be rated as a level  2 on a scale of 1 to 10.  Clients need to be able to walk 3 to 4 miles, and climb a few hundred feet on good trials.

Spring tours include all travel and expenses from Haines, Alaska. Accommodations are comfortable, with good meals, and many other photo opportunities possible, including black and grizzly bears, moose, ptarmigan, Northern Lights, and an authentic Klondike Gold Rush ghost town. Tours are limited to a maximum of four (4) participants to insure individual attention for each participant.

FALL COMBINATION PHOTO TOURS for Bald Eagles and Dall Sheep in 2006 - November 13-18

Haines, Alaska is known world-wide as "The Valley of the Eagles". From mid-November through December the world's largest gathering of Bald Eagles, up to 4,000 strong, congregates along a four-mile stretch of the Chilkat River near Haines. An upwelling of warm water keeps this section of river ice-free, even in the coldest winter weather, and provides spawning grounds for a late run of Chum Salmon. This stretch of river, known as "The Council Grounds", attracts eagles (and other birds and animals) from as far away as Washington state. Cold weather, an abundant food supply, and nearby human activity, combine to make these birds quite tolerant of human presence.

At the same time, cold weather in the interior brings on the mating season for Dall Sheep, North America's most magnificent big game animal. Although not quite as approachable as in the spring, the sights and sounds of these animals going through their tremendous courtship battles and mating rituals make this spectacle well worth the photographer's time and effort.

Fall tours are more physically demanding. The sheep portion of the trip may require a level 5 or 6 effort on a scale of 1 to 10.  Clients may need to hike 1500 - 2000 feet up fairly steep slopes. The eagle portion of these trips are extremely easy, being rated a definite 1.

BOB ADKINS PHOTO TOURS offers fully guided combination Bald Eagle and Dall Sheep photo tours during the month of November and early December. These tours are flexible, and may offer the additional opportunity to photograph moose, fox, coyote, ptarmigan and other birds, plus a Klondike Gold Rush ghost town, and the Northern Lights. Again, these tours are limited to a maximum of four (4) participants to insure personalized service throughout your stay.
